Busy, Busy, Busy. That pretty much sums up our Christmas. Thomas and I counted, and we realized that we participated in seven Christmases. Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn have nothing on us! We had fun at them all, of course, and they are all very different gatherings, but it is hard to imagine how we are going to keep this same pace next year when we have our 2nd kiddo offically in the family picture.
One of the many Christmases was our own, just our little family of 3.
We were blessed to have our choices of edibles from a cornucopia of food--just look at one of the supplies to the left!
Time with family is always a feature of Christmas, and it was nice to have my brother
Thomas got to see his sisters as well, both of which are more local than my bros, but it is nice to see them nonetheless. It's really hard to tell that they are related, isn't it.
My Mother-in-law requested a Christmas picture of her Grandkids. Sounds reasonable, right? She even found cute matching shirts for the boys to wear. We went over to Thomas's sister and bother-in-law's home to try and get the job done.
So, what happens when you try to grab a picture of three kids (ages 1, 2, and almost 4) in a picture?
You guessed it----a whole lot of bad pictures! Not to mention frustrated photographers.
Below is the best one I was able to get out of a plethora of shots and 3 various location attempts (and it is still a very lacking photo). And those matching shirts? Well, you can't even tell the boys match because Daniel's shirt is pretty much covered by an unsmiling Jennna. Thomas's sister took some pictures too, but she was pretty much coming up just as empty as I was on quality.
Good thing it is the thought that counts.
Earlier this week the family went to see the Christmas lights at The Opryland Hotel. This hotel is known for its extravagant lights and fancy decorations, and there is much to see when walking through the conservatory portion of the building. Thomas and I have been to view the lights before, but we have not taken Daniel yet, hence, we decided to bring him along for the trek, letting him soak up all the twinkling, elaborate decorations. In all, he really enjoyed himself. We kept telling him that we were going to look at the lights, and when we got out of the car, he looked up and saw a street light. He quickly pointed at it and said "Oh wow!" So we played along. "Yeah, isn't that neat Daniel? Aren't you glad we came to see the lights?" So as we traveled in, the little man pretty much flipped out about every street light that we passed. It was really funny......for us at least. Since he was having a blast pointing to the street lights, we knew he was going to be excited when we got inside. This is an example of what greets you upon entering the conservatory:
One of my favorite parts was seeing Daniel get excited about things, of course, but I also enjoyed seeing Thomas hold Daniel up so that he could see certain portions better. There is also a fountain that is synchronized to music which is pretty neat. I took a little video of its performance, but it does the actual fountain little justice.Walking so much was a little tiring, especially for Thomas because he had worked all day long, but we were glad that we took the time to go when we did, for certainly the crowds are going to increase as each day brings us closer to Christmas.
We had great intentions and meant for this “big boy room” conversion to be a
birthday present for Daniel, but well----we just now got around to taking care of it (we’re just under a month late; that’s not too bad, right?) In order to get this task done with the least complications, Daniel was sent to Grandma’s for a Friday night and Saturday. Daddy went quickly to work, making sure the room was prepped and ready to paint. Being that 1) I do not paint very well and 2) I am pregnant, I pretty much stayed out of the room and out of Thomas’s way. I did help him take out all the things from the room, so I participated a little. A hand-me-down bed and dresser were put to good use, helping to transform Daniel’s little boy room into one suited for a big boy. Not wanting him to outgrow anything we spent money on too quickly, I opted to buy him a classic boy colored comforter and sham so that things would last longer for his tastes. TJMaxx had lots of sheet sets for cheap, so I did purchase him a Thomas the Train set, which he thoroughly enjoys seeing when he goes into his room. To top it off, there are a few yard sale pics (compliments of my mom) and a consignment sale bed rail to help him stay safe.
The first night for Daniel in his room was a huge success in our eyes, and the remaining nights and naps of this transition have gone well too. A few times he has gotten out, went to his door, and proceeded to knock on it. He wouldn’t cry or yell, just knock. “Knock, Knock, Knock.” “Knock, Knock.” And when we did not go to his rescue, he went back to bed and went to sleep, which is good too because I’ve seen and heard of several kiddos who play until they are utterly exhausted and asleep on the bedroom floor. Daniel at least goes for the comfort of his bed. When he is ready to get out in the mornings, he knocks again. If we do not come right away, he meanders over to his bookshelf and beings to read. Again, no crying or yelling. Upon the second morning, Daniel found some wipes that I left out on the floor of his room, and he pulled all of those out before we went up to get him.
I am very proud of Thomas’s hard work to make sure this was all taken care of in a short period of time. Disassembling and assembling beds, painting with very few mistakes, hanging pictures and shelves flawlessly---it is obvious why he is so awesome!
Daniel has even begun to teach some of his animals how to take a rest in big boy beds rather than cribs. I hope they take to the change as well as our son has!
Now, "I know there's more snow up in Colorado than our roof will ever see...," but you have to admit looking out the front windows at our home and seeing this is not a bad thing!
What a lovely sight!
Last night as the snow was falling, we took the time to put up our Christmas tree. Typically we buy a real tree, but there was not much success in that department this year. We went to Lowe's on Wednesday to buy one, and there were only Charlie Brown trees left.....and those were expensive! Lowe's was having a sale on all their Christmas decor (50% off!) so we thought that we might just get a fake one for the first time. Evidently we were slow to the game this
year, and everyone had already raided those as well. We tried one more place to get a real one, and that place "chose not to sell real ones this year." Their selection of fake trees were gaudy and again too expensive for our tastes. We went home a little sad, for we were looking forward to securing our tree. On Thursday it rained virtually all day long, thus making the purchase of a real tree a rather sloppy experience. Fortunately for us, Target was having a big sale on their trees as well, and Thomas and I found one that we thought A) looked good B) was affordable and C) was one of those pre-lit trees! To be honest, the purchase of the fake tree had me a little sad, for we've always had a real tree, and my family always had a real tree growing up. My grandmother was the only one that had a fake tree, and that did not come until late life. Hers was a beast to put up--you had to put all the right pieces in all the right holes and fluff all the branches, and if any of the color markers on the ends happened to rub off, you just had to guess where the stupid thing went. In the end, it was not even that pretty. Obviously, fake trees have come a long way, for this one was in 3 major pieces that took Thomas about 5 minutes to assemble, including the base. At that point, in all honesty, it already looked nice, but I took some time to "fluff" the branches and spread things out a bit. In short, we are both very pleased with our selection, and now that we actually own our own home, we have a nice place to store the tree, which had always been a reason behind buying a real one before. In fact, if we truly wanted, we could just take the tree up to our storage room and place it in there until next year!I've been talking to and reading the blogs of some other friends, and it appears that all their children just love decorating the tree. It was not that Daniel didn't like it, per say, it is just that he totally didn't get it. He sat this one ornament on the tree (see left), and after that, he proceeded to take off each ornament that I put on. He ended up breaking one of them, but it is repairable. The horse ornament just really appealed to him, for he would take it around the house, neighing and clapping. At some point while doing this,
he dropped it and part of it broke off. No biggie. I really have no clue where it came from, so it is not like he broke a special one or anything. As we decorated, everything was picturesque. It was snowing, everyone was happy, the lights were twinkling.......almost perfect. I think if we had created a fire in the fireplace it would have been right on target, just like a scene in the movies. That is one reason why I really liked being able to have
decorations on the mantle, right above the fireplace. That always seems to be a pretty focal point in the movies, and I have never had one to decorate. The Holy Family is on the right in the picture, and on the left is a snowman photo sequence that Thomas took in college (our friends Jason and Jacob actually made them, and let's just say that if you look closely, you can tell these snowmen are not exactly nice). I think after Christmas I will try to buy some stocking hangers on sale so that I can have them for next year; after all, the stockings are suppose to be "hung by the chimney with care."Now I just need to round out the Christmas shopping by buying a few more gifts----and I need to wrap them all! I am not a very good present wrapper, for I do not have the ability to cut straight or make good edges when folding. Thomas is actually the patient one, so I think he will be recruited this year to wrap some gifts other than mine.
I hope your heart is filled with cheer as mine is today. I know that we are blessed beyond anything we deserve. Having a child that I love so much, I have a better grasp on the gift of God's son, Jesus, yet I know I am no where near comprehending what he truly gave us this holiday season. I pray that all our friends and family feel the love we have for them this Christmas and always. And, if I do not know you and you've come across my words via the world wide web, I hope you have someone in your life to show you love.
Merry Christmas!
There has to be something wrong with you if you do not think this is cute! Seriously, this little boy of ours looked so adorable going into church a few Sundays ago. He simply insisted that he wear his hat to church, and we have been trying to let him carry his own backpack, when it is not too heavy. I happened to have the camera in my purse, so I was able to snap a few pictures on our way into the building. These give my heart such joy! He definitely looks like a man on a mission.
I know some bloggers do a little thankful post every (or at least most) Thursdays. I've always thought it was a sweet idea, but I've never actually done it. Being that today is actually Thanksgiving, and a Thursday, I thought today might be a perfectly great day to create a "Thankful Thursday Post"
Mommy Breaks
Daniel is pretty full of energy, as are most toddlers, and it has been a little difficult to keep up with his extreme pace recently with me being pregnant, along with unassociated sicknesses. Thomas has been great about helping out when he is at home, but when he is at work, it is just me and the kiddo. Fortunately, my son is still a magnificent napper. He will take a 2 hour nap or more in the afternoon---and he'll still go to bed at a great time too. I have been grateful for these naps, for they allow me to get a few things done without him in the middle of it all, as well as grad a little nap myself!
TV I Don't Mind Daniel Watching
I have been very cautious about Daniel watching TV. I just don't want to be a mom that sits her kid in front of the television all day just so she can get peace. Over the summer I would not even turn the TV on when Daniel was awake because even if it was the Today Show, Daniel would stare at it, hence the television was only on for naps when Daniel was out of the room. Recently however, I've been glad to let Daniel watch a show in the mornings on PBS called Sid the Science Kid. This show is a great show for learning cool science things, like growing, charts, irreversible change, health, etc. Since Daniel can be so high octane in the mornings, I have allowed him to watch this show while I sorta wake up and prepare for the day, fix breakfast, or if it is a day I work, he'll watch as I get ready. There are certain portions that are the same every episode, like the kids dancing, and Daniel knows that they are coming and he will join in on the fun. It is actually very cute. Sometimes a fit is thrown when I turn it off after the show is over, but the 30 minutes was at least calm :o). Thanks to Sid, Daniel has even more gusto about brushing his teeth---who could complain about that?
My Husband Washes the Dishes
Yes ladies, you read it correctly. My husband does the dishes! We do have a dishwasher, but everyone knows that everything can not fit, nor should everything actually go into the dishwasher, so some items always need to be hand washed. This is a household chore that my husband does not mind doing.....and I do mind doing it. I will wash occasionally, but this tends to be Thomas's job in the house. I am obviously very happy about this one. Thanks Babe!
The Semester is Almost Over
Ok, I know I only officially work 2 days a week, but I am really glad that the semester is almost over! In fact, I only have to teach 2 days next week and the semester is completed for me. I will of course have to grade some revisions and begin averaging and inputing grades into the system, but the teaching portion is complete. I have had a difficult semester due to some inept policy following from nearly 75 percent of students. It is frustrating to say the least. I am hoping that the spring semester brings forth some students with more attention to details........to say the least.
We're All Healthy and Here
I'm just glad that we are all able to be together this holiday, for I know several families that can not have this blessing. Some are separated temporarily, but others have lost ones that they love very recently, which of course means they will not be together for the season. I also know some families that are going through sicknesses, serious ones, that may separate them from those they love soon. We are grateful for health and a life together. Daniel is growing well, and he appears to be right where he needs (90% height 75% weight at the 2yr check-up). We heard baby #2's heartbeat this week, we've seen an ultrasound, and all appears to be well with that wee-one, as much as one can tell right now. I'm no longer sick, and when I was it was only a silly sickness when compared to diseases like cancer. Thomas, other than a snotty nose, is fine too. We're fortunate, and we know it. We're thankful.
This list could go on and on, but I know that if you've even read this much, you are not likely to read much more! We're thankful this Thanksgiving Day, and we give praises to the one who cares for us. Our prayers go out to everyone with a need this season, and we wish everyone health and safety in the days to come.
To conclude, I'll leave you with a cheesy, yet cute poem that I got in an e-mail. Enjoy!
May your
stuffing be tasty
May your turkey plump,
May your potatoes and gravy
Have never a lump.
May your yams be delicious
And your pies take the prize,
And may your Thanksgiving dinner
Stay off your thighs!
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!
At the start of the month we celebrated Daniel’s birth, complete with a Thomas the Train themed birthday party. It was exciting for me to get everything prepared for the big day, for I knew that Daniel was going to thoroughly enjoy the day. This year, he would “get” that the party was for him. Before the party, I let Daniel decorate his very own birthday cake. It was in a train shape, despite the fact you can’t really tell of such. There were cupcakes for everyone else, but I wanted him to be able to do something special. I think that I might make this a little tradition.
After his nap, Daniel woke up to a world of exciting things. He began to "choo-choo" all through the house, full of joy at all the decorations. Once the party crew showed up, we opened gifts first so all the kiddos would have some new and fun things to play with. Thomas began grilling the hot dogs
while we all snacked on the goodies I had made. I even labeled all the items on the table. A little dorky, I know, but I had just been to a wedding where I got myself a yummy ham sandwich that I soon lathered some mayo on before consuming. Turns out that the mayo was not in fact mayo at all---it was horseraddish for the roast beef! In order to prevent that, I made signs. The party was a fun time, and we were blessed to have friends and family in attendance. Daniel loved all of his gifts, even if a certain gift from Nana and Grandpa Tom took all of the attention at first. HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY DANIEL--We LOVE you!Well, I am sick again. This round is even more of a doozie than the first. Thomas and I do not typically head to the doctor at the first sign of sickness, for better or for worse, but with this sickness, I felt so awful that I decided to go practically at the start.
It all started to settle in on Monday night as I was attempting to drift off into sleep. I was pretty restless that night, and I purchased some Sudafed on my way into teach on Tuesday. Sudafed is one of the only things you can take when you are pregnant. I always hate buying it, for it feels like you are signing away your unborn child just to get it due to the fact is it the drug needed to make Meth, which is unfortunately very prevalent in my area. Alas, it is really my only option, so I sign away.
I managed to get through my work morning (office hours, planning, grading) without much issue. After lunch, however, when my day really starts, I began to feel crummy. I fought through the day and managed to make it home. As I went to bed (at 7PM mind you) I could tell it was going to be another bad night. At 2AM, I resolved that I was going to get some care ASAP.
Anyway, I get a diagnosis from the doc, and on my way home, I get a phone call from one of my colleagues. It went a little something like this:
Andy: Hey, are you feeling any better?
Me: No. Not at all.
Andy: Yeah, you sure sound bad. Did you go to the doctor?
Me: Actually I just left there. He said I had a bad virus.
Andy: Really? A virus? That is weird because it did not seem like a virus yesterday when I saw you.
Me: I don't know. That is just what he said. He had me cough and then he listened to me breathe. After that he said
"Yeah, you have a bad virus"
Andy: What did he give you?
Me: Amoxicillin. But he said he could give me a z-pack if this did not work in a few days.
Andy: That is weird though if you have a virus.
Me: Yeah, I don't know. I just know I feel completely awful and I am going to cancel my classes tomorrow. I can't
teach; I'm so sick.
So, last night, as I attempted to sleep, the sickness again overwhelmed me. I was in bed but not asleep for most of the night. This, of course, gave me lots of time to think......mainly about how awful I felt/feel. The last time I remember feeling this poorly was about 3 1/2 years ago when I was a bridesmaid in my friend Jessica's wedding. I had Bronchitis and Laryngitis. I recall being so happy for Jessica, but as the ceremony was happening, I only thought of two things: 1- Lord please do not let me pass out on this stage as I wear a cute strapless dress and adorable black heels. 2- I can't cough my husky cough during the ceremony, especially during their vows. Fortunately, I did not pass out, and I only coughed as they were exiting the sanctuary ......but everyone was clapping, so I don't think anyone really heard it.
Then it hit me. You have "a bad virus"..............You have "bronchitis." I was so sick I didn't even hear him correctly. Of course he listened to me breathe and cough and then he decided what I had---because it is bronchitis. Amoxicillin does not work on a virus, so why would he prescribe that anyway? Z-packs are for Bronchitis/Pharyngitis/Laryngitis. Geeze. So, I called the office back to have them tell me again what my chart said, and it was confirmed that I was wrong. No mention of a "bad virus" anywhere, only all the other stuff that I had 3 1/2 years ago.
So, I guess I am sick and hard of hearing.
Oh, and did I mention that I am a bridesmaid in my sister-in-law's wedding on Saturday?
Just wanted to let our friends and family that don't already know in on some good news.............
We're expecting another baby!!!
I am currently about 10 1/2 weeks along in the baby growing process, and we have an estimated due date of June 9th. Other than being exhausted from all the life creating, all is well thus far. We'd truly appreciate your love and prayers as we prepare to grow our family again!
